Golden Retriever Saves Boy from Cougar Attack

September 1, 2010 by FirstDogTips

An 18-month-old golden retriever named Angel saved the life of her 11-year-old owner. Austin Forman was outside gathering firewood outside of his home when a cougar charged him. The boy then made an attempt to get back inside his family home. This is when his dog jumped between the boy and the cougar. Austin quickly told his mother the animal was killing their dog. She called 911 and authorities quickly arrived and had to shoot twice, killing the cougar. Even after it had been killed it still had its teeth sunk into the golden retrievers face. The dog managed to survive and is currently receiving treatment for the injuries she sustained.

Golden Retriever History

The golden retriever history is a long one, dating all the way back to the eighteen hundreds in Scotland. The breed was first developed by a gentleman named Lord Tweedmouth, who was looking to make a hunting dog that would work well in the field, and have great appearance as well.

Lord Tweedmouth purchased a yellow colored puppy, from a Brighton cobbler in 1865. It was the only yellow pup in a litter of black wavy coated retrievers. This puppy was named Nous. This pup was later bred to a Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle in 1868 and again in 1871. This was the beginning of the line of yellow retrievers.

Descendants of Nous and Belle, were breed with wavy and flat coated retrievers, another Tweed water spaniel, and a red setter. Lord Tweedmouth would keep mostly the yellow pups, and a few black ones, to continue his breed.

Some of these dogs were given to friends and relatives, and were primarily used by gamekeepers, as a gentlemen’s gundog.

Lord Tweedmouth’s sons brought the golden retriever to America in 1900, where they became popular very quickly. They were first considered to be a variety of the flat coated retrievers, but were later recognized as a separate breed in 1912, and recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925.

The golden retriever is now the second most popular dog in America, and the second most registered with the American Kennel Club. The labrador retriever in number one.

Golden retriever history is truly interesting, and still continues to be today. Even though it was bred primarily as a hunting dog, and is still one of the best at that sport, it has many other skills today.

Some interesting golden retriever facts show that golden retrievers are now very popular with law enforcement. Because of their keen sense of smell, they are used for detecting items such as drugs and explosives. They are also used for search and rescue.

The golden retriever has become very popular as a therapy dog for visiting people at nursing homes, or children’s hospitals. They are also being used as seeing eye dogs.

But the most popular use of the golden retriever, will always be as a family pet. The are wonderful dogs, who love to be around people, and don’t like to be left out of anything. They are beautiful to look at, and will give you many years of happiness.

Bedding For Your Golden Retriever

It is important to exercise wisdom while selecting bedding for your golden retriever. As he/she would be spending the night in the bed allocated to him/her, do spare some thought for making him/her comfortable.

Golden retrievers make great pals, hence appropriate bedding would be a stepping-stone to an everlasting friendship.

Here are some tips for selecting bedding -

- Firstly, you need to decide where you would prefer the bed for your golden retriever. Would you have a bed for him inside the house? Or would you want to opt for one outdoors? Depending on your choice, you would have to settle for comfortable bedding for your pet.

- The golden retriever that you have got home would be leaving his/her comfort zone that he/she may have been used to. Known experiences, memories and scents will be replaced by unfamiliar ones.

It is therefore very important to make him feel comfortable. If you think your puppy is missing his/her mom and his litter too much, you may put a towel as bedding for him/her. A comfortable soft towel may ease him/her a bit. That will help him/her relax and have a comfortable sleep.

- Bedding Material – Natural fiber such as wool is considered ideal as bedding. Wool absorbs moisture and keeps the golden retriever warm. That ensures him/her a good nights sleep. It is not a wise idea to provide your golden retriever with an expensive blanket. In no time he/she will chew the blanket. So it may be better to avoid such a waste of money.

- If you would like to provide bedding for your dog right next to you, be prepared to wake up in the middle of the night and help him/her to the bathroom.

- Usually it is a good practice to keep food and water close to the golden retriever, so that he/she can help himself at night if he is hungry or thirsty. Make it a routine to make your dog release himself/herself an hour after the last meal.

- Doghouses are recommended if you wish keep your golden retriever outside the house. It is important to furnish the doghouse properly for the comfort of your pet. Ensure that the doghouse keeps your dog warm.

You can pile up the doghouse with enough straws, so that your golden retriever can play with it and make a bed out of it as well. It would also be nice to provide him/her with a quilt, incase he needs to wrap himself/herself up to feel comfortable.

- Golden retrievers are also known to prefer wooden shavings.

- In case you would like to add variety to your options of bedding, you have the choice of newspapers as well. However, chances are that your favorite pet may just get a little playful with newspapers.

The right bed goes a long way in making a dog comfortable in new surroundings and so you need to pay special attention to selecting bedding for your golden retriever.

If you choose to keep it outside the house, make sure you spend some quality time with your dog. Make your him/her feel at home.
